Thanks guys

I need to catch up a bit with the updates, I've been remiss in not doing this as often as I should!

Pic 1
Added thick foil to the mirror to provide a reflective surface and include the additional mirror on the post side of the rear view.

Pic 2
Painted and added the gun sight. This version is the 'oval' glass version. The square type was used later. Both versions are included in the Airfix kit. Extra marks for effort to Airfix!

Pic 3
Under side is fully masked, ready for the upper surface painting.

Pic 4
I started with some pre-shading in a couple of areas, notably from the engine cowl back.

Pic 5 - 10
This show the sequence of masking and painting the roundels. Turned out very good, so I'm pleased. :D
I'll need to remask the roundels with kabuki tape to progress with the camo. The vinyl masks are good, but they do have gaps between the concentric rings of the roundels.

Cheers

Peter

Thanks W!

More Progress!

Pic 1
Here you can see I have back masked all the markings with kabuki tape.

Pic 2 3
Here I have added the Montex mask letter 'AZ' behind the roundel. The mask set if you remember is for AZ-H, as there are no decals for X4009, AZ-Q, I have made these by cutting out the Q from Kabuki tape. Admittedly it did take more than one go before I was satisfied with the result.......:D. Oh I forgot. I first painted the area behind the codes MSG!

Pic 4 5
After masking was complete, I started on with the Dark Earth. I'm using Model Master enamels for everything by the way. That's just my preference.
Also, I bought some AML 'B' scheme paint masks for the camo as a bit of an experiment. Lets see how they go.

Cheers for now.

Great progress! I really like the fact that you are masking your roundels and markings... should make a noticeable difference!

I agree. I'm toying with the idea of making my own masks like those Montex ones. Apparently there are digital cutters out there for not too bad a price but I need to look into it.

Let us know what you find. I was impressed with the vinyl "12" that Blacklist/Provie made for my MiG-3 and that one was pretty thick like it was geared toward heavier duty applications.

Thanks guys. A cutter machine would be a great gadget to have around, especially if you could do Kabuki tape also. I'd save a fortune on masks, and widen the possibilities.

Well another update to catch up.

The AML masks were great. While not especially designed for the Airfix kit, they were well cut and easy to apply. Saved heaps of time doing this fiddly work. And they covered and joined well, so no gaps or mismatched pattern. Recommended!

Pic 2
Sprayed the RAF Green. I was happy with the result, although there were a couple of areas of Dark Earth that need another going over, so I'll sort that and carry on.

Pic 3-5
The walk ways were next before unwrapping everything. The early marks of Spitfire (1-5, plus XII and early IX) had assymetric markings for the walkways due to the construction of the wings. It's a detail easily overlooked, but Airfix instructions were spot on, and painting them proved to be a simple task.

Pic 6-8
So, time to unwrap and see how everything turned out. I was well pleased, but there was a couple of small tidy ups here and there to attend to. Personally, I like the results of sprayed markings and wil try to do more in the future.

Thanks for stopping by, cheers

Peter
