Have an old picture frame that you can rob, mitre corners and glue to your base? If not, buy some half round edging at your local hardware store. A handsaw and a cheap mitrebox and you have instant edges.

Man that crate looks wonderful on your dio.
 
Wow! What a difference! That looks fantastic Dan, the tree stumps and cuttings look very convincing, and the whole thing looks very real. Great work mate!
