Harrison

I have never built a single plastic model in my life, and only a couple of wooden ship models. I have to say, son, that watching what you are doing is truly inspirational for an old guy like me. My advice, is dont rush. Thats a universal rule for any work involving small details. I have just finished building my house....because I had to learn from scratch a whole range of skills, like tiling, carpentry, cabinet making, concrete work, gyprocking....all things and skills i knew nothing about when I started, I had to go slowly. The first thing was finding out how to do a job, doing the research is a huge part of this....watching skilled tradesman was another. Having the right tools and materials are all important. A reasonable workspace. If you can practice on scrap material to learn something, to get the technique right, do that.

Dont setle for second best. Always aim to do the very best that you can. There are life lessons in this for you, about how to approach any task, not just modelling. Patience, perseverance, detail.

Keep at it son, you are doing marvellously

Well isn't this dandy? The directions say there are suppose to be cylindrical shapes preset into the machine gun housing, they are clearly not there, any suggestions?

Here you are a couple of pics that show how the fuselage mounts of MGs looked like. Obviously you need the MG barrels to add. If you don't have these in the kit you can make them yourself.

Do you know how to make these barrels? Take a piece of the sprue frame and warmed it up above a candle for instance.Then stretch it. But be very careful and don't burn your fingers. Here you are a pic with stretched piece of a mould frame.Then cut off a few parts of the stick.Try to get a couple of the same diameter.

You can use a piece of a wire of a correct diameter as well.

Okay, a big thanks to Terry and Wojtek. I made the home-built gun barrels. Using the tools in the picture and a candle. The gloves help, burnt my hand. I painted the barrels black.

Terry's method was used and applied to the very little showing cracks with a toothpick. It should dry then I can sand it down.

Barrles look good Harrison. But I would like to pay your attention to a correct fitting of these parts when attaching to the fuselage..I think there is a necessity of sanding undersides of both parts with these barrels.

Concerning the putty using...humm . The idea is good . Terry has pushed you into a right path.But ...if you would have checked if both halves fitted correctly before you put them together, you didn't have to use a putty. Unfortunately you didn't it and you got a few gaps there.You used the talcum powder and future liquid mixture.But in the case the CA glue seems to be better.It would give a better join at these gap areas.But now it is done so don't try to fix it with the glue.
I would add some more of the putty there and then sanding slightly.

Ah but one of the gun mounts, mounting for the barrel is sideways. Which was weird!

Being sideways....it happens quite often to parts of a such kind kits..The only way of correcting a such parts is sanding , drilling or making scratchbuilt.

Not sideways but, very crooked. If it was a real P-40 this gun barrel would be shooting way left of the target!

It doesn't matter... such mistakes always have to be corrected.

I think I can just carve out a larger groove to put the barrel into, with my knife.
