Shinpachi, i respect your point of view, so a request, could you please post a picture of something you consider to be great Japanese art.
from a western point of view, I don't consider some of our (western) so called great art to be great or even art. Jackson Pollock painting immediately come to mind or Warhol's soup can "art"

Mike on an associated subject, the Japanese value western "Impressionist" paintings which is not a surprise when you realise the impressionists were influenced by Japanese Chinese art which started to appear in Europe often on decorated plates or even packaging. Many ancient pictures in Japan and china are very similar to impressionism rather than the very litteral works of the renaissance.

As another example a Japanese garden with gravel would be seen as "minimalist" there is almost nothing there but what there is is beautifully arranged, like a modern sculpture.

Another is food, Japanese food is always beautifully and precisely arranged like a work of art similar to western "neuveau cuisine" small portions but many of them and very colourful and tasty.

If I may recommend you some great work from the same era as Mr. Suga, Kanzan Shimomura(1873-1930) was also one of the bests.

Shinpachi, very beautiful especially, to me, the 3 Giesha screen and the tree with the vines. the birds are a close second and i truely admire the intricacy of the second. the sepia takes a while to appreciate but i like it more and more as i look at it

Eirei-do.
Established in 1906 as the bell tower.
Diverted to the chapel during the WW2 as the bell had been dedicated to the nation as metal resources.

Ah, sorry. I have misunderstood it as the net above.

The fence is to protect the Buddha statue inside the building because it is national treasure gifted by Enryaku Temple in Kyoto.

Shinpachi san, do you have any photos of the Nara Daibutzu? I think that's how its spelled. I think its the place where a very large Budda sits inside a large building and they only open the doors to see its face on New Year's day, if memory serves correctly.
