For your much better understanding, this is the Chinese architecture I was impressed with in Taipei, Taiwan twenty years ago.
I believe the Japanese ancient architectures also could have had the same atmosphere at the time.

Yes, it was a beautiful place Eric, as you may know, together with the memorial hall for Chiang Kai-shek and his big statue.
I recommend.
 
The former IJA 4th Division Headquarters built in 1931.
As this old building had been almost closed for a couple of decades, I thought this would be demolished sooner or later but, to my delight, has been fully renewed for citizens and tourists recently. I had a chance to tour today.

... wonderful, graceful architecture. This establishment is an integral part of Japanese history - in stone and concrete - investment - rejuvenation of the ruins by the government is a positive sign, IMO :)

I frankly felt that, good or bad, the past is always with us.
BTW, new naming for the building is "MIRAIZA" which means a theater for the future.
