Thanks for keeping track of my build and your comments.

I finished the winch struts, as I said, not an easy chore. It is flat and level now.

And the struts for the gear pontoons. I had to remove the locating pins on the strut at the pontoons and put a bit of 1.6 styrene in it's place. This way I could remove the pin and file the end Flat to fit the new angle of the strut. I hat to remove almost 3mm from the top of the strut and reshape the angle to get the pontoon Level from one side to the other to get the gear legs to be plumb up and down when they get attached. Decreasing the length of the long edge of a triangle to get the other two to be at right angles.

I sailor on.

Thanks for keeping track and all your comments.....

But..........

I am sitting here fuming at my lack of attention to the kit in general. Here it is in a nut shell.

SH-3H does equal an SH-3A at all. Not only does the airframe differ in a few areas, but the gear pontoons are the first version without all the accessories, sonobouys, floatation bags and drogues. Take a look at the photo and compare with the post above.

Even Vic had to use resin short pontoons for his Westland, he also used the 3H kit. I have looked for the ones he used but I cannot find thm. Seems they are cast by someone who bought the mold off a guy who made the originals, and the new bloke just does them in his "spare time". I tried chopping the kit pieces up, making a clay end in the shape I need then a mold, which worked well, but the resin has turned to sh!t. So I have to wait to clean out my mold.

To make matters worse, seems Hasegawa makes an HSS-2B......... which is The 3A model before the name change to 3A. Now doesn't that take the cake????? I ask. Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh.

Anybody know someone at Hasegawa? I shall try and grovel enough to get a couple of pontoons. Gonna have to bear with me till I get this sorted!

I have to add this......
After taking a closer look at the Has HSS-2B kits instructions..........
it does NOT have the proper pontoons!!!! They are the same as the H kit!!!

Feel somewhat better, but only on the fact there was No way of avoiding my problem with the pontoons......

Now I need to talk with Vic to see where he got his!

Hope you can get it sorted Bill.
I hate it when a manufacturer releases a kit using the same basic mould, but just altering the name and decals - especially at the prices of some of these kits. Not too bad if, like most of us, we can keep abreast of the model market. But, anyone fairly new to the hobby is actually being conned into thinking a 'new' kit has arrived, when in fact it's a re-issue of an old kit, made to look like something else!

I guess I'm missing something, but I don't see a major difference between the two. Is it the rear bottom profile that is wrong? And if so, could you form the basic skeleton with styrene rods and then putty the shape?

That's about it Paul, in scale they're about a foot too long one side, 15 to 18" the other. One side behind the wheel well is a load of, I think, sonobouys in a pocket at the underside. The other, starboard side, is some kind of MAD gear. The 3A had none of these.

What you are suggesting is what I have started to do. Hack them off and I've put a vertical styrene profile in place. I'll try loading it with Tamiya putty to shape. I've also found a couple of aftermarket thingies on the web, but I believe they are long gone from production from Belcher Bits and Cutting Edge Modelworks. Anyone know of these guys?????

Photos of what I have done so far when I get off work today......

I have Mike Belcher's e-mail address if you want to get in touch with him Bill. He's based in Canada - no harm in asking him if he has some, and if he can supply direct. He's still in business (the SBC's for my Halifax were from him), so maybe he can knock-out a pair?

You betcha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gimme.

If I can get them Belchers, I will be in heaven...... but here is what I have done so far.....

Photo 1 is the sketch of the diff in the profiles.
Photo 2 I cut the ends off and clay sculpted the new profile on it.
Photo 3 I hung this in a plastic bottle
Photo 3 it's filled with mold silicone. It would have worked okay, if the resin hadn't of gone south on me, it's turned to crap, all sticky when it came out of the mold. I was planning on fitting it to the rear of each and finishing it off.
Photo 4 shows the styrene profile added to the end of the chopped up sponsons. My next attempt at making them right.

Photo 5 But I do have to add that I found a review of the HSS-2 by Has, and darned if they ARE as they should be on the HSS-2/SH-3A. There was a photo of the sprue in the review! Bl00dy h3ll.........
